Merits and Demerits of Satellite Communication

Merits and Demerits of Satellite Communication Points : merits and demerits of satellite communication Merits 1. For long distance communication or across the oceans satellite is the only choice.
2. Satellites in close elliptical orbits require relatively low transmitting power and receiver sensitivity.
3. Geo-stationary satellites require no tracking.
4. Satellite communication has the ability of multiple accesses.
5. Three satellites placed at proper distance can cover world wide communication.
6. With satellites uninterrupted 24 hours communication can be achieved.
7. Satellites have higher signal quality.
8. Broad bandwidths can be obtained to put more information on the carriers.
Demerits 1. Satellites in close elliptical orbits must be tracked by the antenna of the ground station.
2. Large diameter antenna, high power and high sensitivity receivers are essential.
3. Satellite communication is disturbed by the solar activities and cyclones in the space.
4. Satellites efficiency drops due to aging of the components.
5. The longer propagation times (approx. 300 ms) are a significant disadvantage.
6. Initial design and launching of the satellite in the orbit results in extremely high cost.
7. Greater Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) is required.
