Application of D.C. Motors

Application of D.C. Motors Points : Application of D.C. Motors, D.C. Shunt Motor, Series motor, Compound motors 1. D.C. Shunt Motor For a given field current in a shunt motor, the speed drops from no load to full, load is about 6 to 8%. In view of this shunt motor is termed as constant as in Lathes, drilling machine, planers, shapers, metal cutting machine, blowers, fans, wood working machine paper mill etc. 2. Series Motor Series motors produce high starting torque so it is best suited to drive hoists, trains, elevators and cranes etc. 3. Compound Motors A compound motor with a strong field, has its char approaching that of a series motor. Such type of motor is used where driven load requires high starting torque. In series motor no load speed becomes dangerously high but in compound motor weak field limits no load speed. Some of their applications are Rolling mill, elevators, punches, shears, conveyors, presses etc. A compound motor with weak series field has its char. approaching that of a shunt motor weak series field causes more dropping speed torque characteristics than with a shunt motor.
