Sockets

Sockets Points : Electric Sockets, Definition Sockets are used to enable the portable apparatus to be connected to the final sub-circuits. The socket out let is the fixed portion connecte4 to the fixed wiring and consist two or three contact tubes and terminals. The base of socket outlet is made of vitreous porcelain, or tough insulating material and thee contact tubes are made with, Phosphor bronze or hard- drawn brass. Sockets are may be 2-pin, 3-pin and 5-pin,type. Socket outlets and used for circuit not exceeding 250V and current rating is 2A, 5A, 10A and 13A, 15A.

In 3-pin socket outlet, there are three terminals and marked L N and 0. The phase or live conductor is always connected to terminal marked L and neutral conductor or wire is connected to terminal N and earth wire is connected to terminal marked E. IEE regulation D-5 requires the earthing terminals of socket out-lets to be connected to the earth-continuity conductor of the final sub circuit.

The 3-pin switch and socket may be of the interlocking type, so arranged that the switch cannot be put (ON) unless the plug is in position. Socket-outlets of 15A rating has entire final sub-circuit. Socket out-lets of 2A rating are normally used for light-current appliances such as table lamps etc.
