1. Positive terminal of one machine should be connected to the positive terminal of other machines.
2. The voltages of two machines should be approximately equal before these machines are connected.
Normally only generators with dropping voltage-current characteristics may be connected in parallel. The drooping voltage-current characteristic of a single d.c. generator. This characteristic shows that if the load increases, then the load current flowing supplied by the generator increases and its terminal voltage will fall. If either the speed of the prime mover of the generator or the amount of field current in the generator is increased, then the generated voltage E0 increases and the whole terminal voltage characteristic shifts upward. Since the characteristic shifts upwards, the terminal voltage for any given load current will increase.
