Such equipment includes public address systems, high fidelity amplifiers, and the audio circuits of AM, FM and TV receivers. The principal circuit of an AF generator is a variable frequency audio oscillator. The frequency range depends on the particular AF generator; a typical range is from 20 Hz to 2000 KHz. A calibrated frequency control is used to vary the oscillator output frequency. In a broad-band (Wide range) AF generator, the frequency band may be divided into several convenient ranges. The appropriate range is then selected with range or multiplier switches that operate with the variable calibrated dial. The output waveform is a fundamental sine wave; however variable square wave is often also provided.
