To transmit a document through Fax machine, the document is positioned in the machine. Then a telephone call is made by dialling the number of the person who is to receive this document. By doing so, an electrical connection is established between the calling and called machines. The “Send” key is then pressed at the transmitting end, which switches the telephone circuits to the Fax machine. When the circuit between the two machines is complete, a process called handshaking takes place which means that both machines are in synchronization.

A scanner assembly scan the document and converts the images on the document into electrical signals and are fed to the microprocessor. The microprocessor processes the data and then fed it to the network control unit. Thus in this way, each line of data on the document is scanned and transmitted. At the receiving end the data is received and sent to the memory through the network control unit, modem and microprocessor. From the memory, the data are sent to the printer. The printer prints one line at a time. A stepper motor controls the movement of the paper until the whole document is completed.
