Polarity Wiring Test
Points : Polarity Wiring Test, Using Megger, Using continuity tester, Using test lamp
A test has to be made to verification of polarity of all single pole switches, including switches on
socket-outlets -and fuses are connected to phase wire and that there is no break in the conductors. For
lighting circuit all the lamps, should be removed, the main switch is in ON position, all the fuses are
connected in circuit and all the switches is in OFF position:
(a) Using test lamp:
One way of doing this test is by means of a portable lamp or test lamp. One terminal of the test lamp is
connected to the main switch neutral terminal and the other placed against a terminal in the switch when
the switch is ON. If the switch is correctly connected the test lamp will fully light and if there is no
light the polarity is incorrect. In that event the test may be repeated on each terminal with the switch
OFF. If the switch has been connected to the neutral wire and the lamp directly on the live or phase
wire, the test lamp light at about half brilliancy on one terminal as it will be in series with the
fixed lamp. This test s performed only on the supply.
For socket-outlets a test should be made with test lamp connected to the ‘L’ and E’ terminals of a plug.
‘“When the plug is inserted into a socket-outlet, if socket is correctly. connected, then the test lamp
will light at full brilliance.
In case of switched socket-outlet is should give light only then the switch on the socket-outlet is in
the ON position.
(b) Using continuity tester:
If the supply is not present then the continuity tester is used for performing of test. The procedure of
polarity test to using continuity tester is same as test lamp. The one terminal of the test lamp is
connected to switch fuse phase terminal and the other terminal is connected to each switch terminal one
by one. If the switches are connected to the phase wire then lamp will give light if the switch is
connoted to the neutral wire (he lamp will not give the light in this condition change the terminal wire
of the switch.
(c) Using Megger:
Polarity test can be performed by using megger. The testing Leads of the of the megger are successively
connected to the switch fuse terminal and by with each switch terminal one by one. Turn the megger
handle at a steady Constant speed of about 120rpm. If the megger scale shows the zero ohm reading it
means the polarity is correct and if will give the infinity ohm reading. it means the polarity is
incorrect.
