Layout of Conduit Wiring
Points : Layout of Conduit Wiring
Conduit can be ‘installed on the surface of walls, ceilings, girders, or concealed in concrete or plaster, or run
under wood floors. In all cases, the conduit system of each circuit must be erected complete before any of the
cables are drawn in. This is to prevent damage to the cables if the conduit was bent, screwed etc. with the cables
inside. The conduit run should be continuous throughout its length and kept as straight as possible it should
consist of either horizontal or vertical runs, never at an angle.
As mentioned in the section on Earthing, all conduit should be kept clear of gas, air, water, steam and pipes of
other services. Gas pipes should be specifically avoided and the conduit should be either re-routed or set out so
that at least 3 inches separates the pipes and conduit. If the conduit has to be run near air or water pipes, then
spacers of wood or other insulating material should be inserted. If the two services are very close and there is a
chance of them accidentally touching, then the conduit should be bonded to the pipe with a good clamp.
If conduit is run in humid conditions, and there is danger of condensation forming inside the conduit, then holes
should be drilled at the lowest point of the conduit system or alternatively, conduit boxes with drainage holes
should be fitted.
